Brief introduction in Climate Protection: fields of activities
Case study: CO2PERATION
The M+R Spedag Group is one of the leading Swiss logistic providers and operates in 23 countries. In the project CO2PERATION, Spedag works together with the German mailorder company Witt Weiden, the logistics- and warehousing-partner GROUP7 and ENCO in Turkey to consider the full and comprehensive potential of CO2 reductions and climate protection along the supply chain. The project is an opportunity to achieve significant changes through cooperative actions supervised by Systain.
M+R Spedag focuses mainly on the optimization of the logistic chain, especially route optimization, transport shifting and consolidation. Therefore different transportation modes have been analyzed for the transportation from the manufacturer in Thailand to the warehouse of Witt in Weiden, Germany. Using air fright causes with 5,15 kg CO2 per kg textile in comparison to sea fright 15 times higher CO2-emission. Furthermore the contribution of pre- and on-carriage on the total CO2-emissions has been analyzed.
The results show that especially on-carriage has a significant influence on total emissions. By looking only at the carriage in Thailand, the transport of the goods by truck from the supplier to the warehouse has with 89% the highest impact of the total CO2-Emissions of the pre-carriage and therefore the highest potentials for optimization. Using vehicles with natural gas- engines in this area can reduce the CO2- emissions by 15 – 20%. The targeting dialog of all participants has already shown that CO2PERATION presents a promising concept for active and success oriented climate protection.
